Thanked: 0Honing unevenly ?
Hey all,
I'm a total straight razor newbie, though I've been doing the DE thing for a while now.
I've actually managed to get a good edge on my Fillarmonica 3/8. The problem is that the edge is only on the *back* half of the blade. While I can easily sharpen that part, I can't seem to do anything to make the other half usable.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
Mike

Thanked: 369You might be unintentionally lifting, even very slightly, the point end of your razor as you hone. Suggestion, try honing very slowly making an effort to keep the entire blade flat against the hone through the pass from heel to point on both sides. Use the spine of your razor as a guide.

Thanked: 4942This usually can be corrected with a few circular movements on both sides of the razor using the Norton 4k and then going to the X stroke. Honedright's comments are right on and would be an absolute necessity for both circle and X stroke. Sometimes the smaller razors (3/8) can be difficult to keep flat. Go slow and make sure the razor stays flat. Lynn

Welcome, Mike
For some (like me) thinking of rolling the main point of pressure up the blade from heel to tip as you progress up the hone is a good way to focus on the whole edge one piece at a time. Each man finds his own way so try it all out, but don't switch back and forth from one method (X stroke) to another (rolling) too much. Rather, if the previous pyramid didn't help, try altering slightly from what you did previously and look for a process of elimination toward what works best for you. Just MHO.
