Thread: Which of our hones gives you a better shave? BBW or Coti

Many people have said they thought the sample sizes in the BBW vs Coti test that was referenced were too small. So rather than debate about it, let's continue the testing.

Since this is an attempt at an experiment, let's try to control the methods. Please:
-Use two identical razors OR the same razor.
-Select, from your own hones, 1 BBW and 1 coticule
-Choose one of the two starting points (either set the bevel on a 1k OR do the edge down on glass dulling - DO THE SAME THING FOR EACH OF THE TWO TRIALS)
-From there on in, carry out one stone honing (do it however you like, but in general, you should start with slurry, dilute the slurry, and finish with just water)
-Do whatever you want while honing (any number of strokes, stroke type, dilution pattern, etc), but use only the one hone to take your razor's edge as far as you can on that stone
-If you strop your razors, use only plain leather, and do the same number of strokes for each razor
-Shave test each razor under identical circumstances (Same EVERYTHING or as much as possible)
-Vote here for which hone gave you the better shave.
-Post about your honing experience (no way to vote on that, but it will tell us more about your cut speed, difficulties, eases, etc.)

I hope the method is clear enough, but if you have questions, please feel free to ask.

The only reason I chose the starting point as either dulled off glass or straight off the 1k is that I believe those starting points will make this doable within a reasonable amount of time AND will minimize the effect of other hones on the edge. If you feel you MUST use more hones, please go no farther than a 4k before switching over to the BBW or coti.

The point is to add to the body of knowledge about how these stones compare by tapping into a larger sample size (people and hones).

IF YOU POSTED SOMETHING IN THE OTHER BBW TEST THREAD, PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS, TEST OUT YOUR OWN HONES, AND POST THE RESULTS HERE.

You just want to compare 2 stones each other?

If that is the answer i have no idea what made you think they are comparable to each other.
Coticule is a hone people used for sharpening ,
BBW is a stone people used as a bricks for homes ,sideways etc.

While I appreciate you sharing your thoughts, I would really prefer the discussion in this thread to be based DIRECTLY on results of individual's hone comparisons doing heads up tests of one hone against another. I would request that members not bring in their prior beliefs about either hone, regardless of how much experience they are founded on. Please do the heads up test, and then share your thoughts about YOUR test.

I have only used 3 different BBW stones, but they all seemed to sharpen the razor with slurry before I went to a coticule with water only.

I have not tried to shave off a BBW yet. Will try later. If you search the forums there are people that swear by it though, different strokes for different folks and all that.

Ben, same to you as I said to Sham. Please do the test, then post. No prior conceptions, no speculation, just the results of the tests.

Sure thing. Replied before I saw your post. I will dull a "Known Good" razor on glass tonight and do the needful.

My BBW is good for the mid range polishing...but to take it to the coti after starting with slurry and down to just water there is no comparison, either under my little microscope or on my face And I have tried just after the BBW to see

Is this based on the test I outlined in the original post, or based on your past experiences?

That was a very interesting question! Too bad there were much too low answers...

So as I understand it, OR 2 the same razors/ or one razor dulled the same, same unicot or dilucot on the same manner
with razor(s) with BBW or Coti and see which stone give best result?

I would give it a shot if that still matters?
