Thanked: 2209A few years back the back hone stroke was used to remove any wire edge that may have formed. Some used it as a preventative measure. If that did not succeed in removing the wire edge then the edge was drawn thru a wood match stick.

Thanked: 267I have watched some people who do a lot of honing and there are a few that I have seen that use a kinda "backhitch" (since I don't know what it is called) at the beginning of the stroke. It is like a back honing stroke for about 1/2 inch, or less, with a slight half circle then a normal honing stroke. I would imagine that it would cause any scarf off the blade before the stroke, just a guess though.
Take care,
Richard
