Just wanted to post a quick thank you to JoeD and a few others on your input for what, were and how to start a honing processes on an old ERN I have. Your input was invaluable to me and you all set me in the correct direction.
I purchased a set of Ice Bear 1000 grit,4000 grit, and a 8000 grit from woodcraft here in my local area. The employee told me that Ice Bear is much better than Norton (I would guess it's more an opinion than anything) I was trying to get a good edge on some old Arkansas stones I had. (don't even know the grit) so I'll just say course, medium and fine. I could never get that smooth mirror finish on the edge I needed for a comfortable shave.
After purchasing these stones and much reading I have sharpened and honed this razor to a surgical edge with a mirror finish. I couldn't afford a strop, so I took an old leather jacket I had from high school and cut a strip out of it and glued it to a 1X4 it works great. I have shaved with this razor that's probably twice my age (I'm 42) a number of times now. Still getting use to the neck and heavy growth on the chin area. But so far one swipe takes a few days growth off, very nice.
I bought a second set of stones for the kitchen knifes that are now surgical sharp as well, my wife says thank you as well. She no longer has to worry about cutting her self with an inferior edge.
Thanks again all
