Thanked: 3about to buy hones.
Good day everyone.
I've got two straights, both of which pass the nail test, but do not pop armhair. Since one of them comes from the honemeister and he only took away the nicks, I've decided to go into honing myself.
I would like to buy the minimum, and in foroafeitado, I've been told to buy a yellow coticule and a 12k natural. However, I think that a barber hone would work pretty much the same than the latter, what do you think?
I can have a barber hone much easily here in Barcelona, so I would prefer it this way. For the coticule, I can wait.
Any advise?

Thanked: 1262The 'Honemeister' only honed out the nicks?
I think you would have been better off having that one completely honed to use as a benchmark for your other razor when honing.
A barber hone does work great for touchups, but I cannot see it replacing the entire 1k-8k range.
I like coticules, but there are other options available. Check out the links in my signature, specifically What Hones Do I need?Last edited by Slartibartfast; 03-07-2011 at 04:05 PM.

I agree with Ben, a barber hone alone wont do the job of taking a razor fron dull to shave ready. They're really for touching up only.
If you want a full set of hones you'll need a bevel setter, sharpener, polisher and finisher to get a dull razor sharp. Its good fun though, and then theres the slippery slope of HAD..!

Thanked: 3Thank you guys, but I think I didn't write properly.
I was already planning to buy a coticule, for working properly in razors. My question is, can I use a barber's for finishing the honing process? Or should I go for the natural 12k? I have already said I prefer the first option.

If you have a coticule I wouldnt bother with the barber hone. IMO a coti will give a much smoother edge than a barber hone (which can feel a little harsher in my experience) and will certainly give you a shave ready edge.

Thanked: 335FMI,
You're right, but when I first clicked on the link displayed on your earlier post, there appeared the message that it had been deleted. Really, I swear. Now it is entirely possible that with this superb cold I'm experiencing that I could be blowing out my brains along with all these gallons of collecting mucous. It's my good fortune that I don't have grasp for the rare straws of excuses; nope, reasons abound.
