Thread: jewelers loop

What would you recommend for the magnification on a loop for checking a bevel? 10X, 20X, 30X?

For honing, I like 8x or 10x but with at least 30mm diameter lens.

+1 on onimaru55s' obsevation on lens diameter.

Try and get a loupe that is as large as possible, with a flat field and achromatic.

I use 10x & 20x triplets for the intial bevel work.

As the magnification increases, the working distance and the depth of field decreases.

For me, 20x is the useful maximum for such loupes.

If you can get a stereo microscope, they are so much more relaxing to use !

I use a simple 10x loop these days instead of my little radioshack scope.

I find it easier to use and you can easily see scratches/chips/pitting.

With any optical instrument it's all about the resolution not magnification. You can see more with a quality 10x than a poor 60x. If you buy quality 10x is all you need. Go for something with good eye relief.

This is good advice.. Whatever lens type you choose a broader clear view rather than fuzzy edges & a narrow focus helps to hunt for trouble areas.
