Thanked: 0Proffesional honed edge
Is it possible to get an edge like a pro with just honing on a Norton 4k and a norton 8k?

Thanked: 40to be honest the ONLY thing that will give you a pro honed blade is experience. however many on this site used the 4k/8k as a staple hone for years and got great shaving edges ie Lynn.
so the possibility is there in the equipment however you'll just need to be a little patient and you'll be right.

4/8K Norton is a widely used hone by many here. However most honemeisters use finer hones nowadays. Lynn has posted about the development of his personal preferences here. Along the way he acquired a taste for finer hones.

You can get a GOOD edge out of the Norton 8k, to get a GREAT edge will take a finer stone.

Thanked: 1936It's all about learning the basics. Once you learn how to use a Norton 4/8 (and maybe a bevel setter like a Shapton or Naniwa 1K) and consistently get good edges from it, you have learned the basics. Then and ONLY then is when you need to get yourself a finisher & then learn it. It's all about the learning process of EACH and every stone.
Back to the question. No, you will not be able to provide a edge "like" a pro does off the 8K no matter how good you are. They are not stopping at 8K is why. All of the pro's are using finishers to take a good shaving edge and make it amazing. Dang thing is that even if we get the exact same stones as the Honemeisters, they still are one step ahead. Why? They are still learning just as we are with every blade they hone...just as we do. Thing is that they hone more blades, thus have a "edge" on us...just don't give up trying and learning & as your skills progress some of the "noobs" will say the same about your edges.Southeastern Oklahoma/Northeastern Texas helper. Thank you and God Bless, Scott
