Default 1000 grit vs 4000 grit hone

I need to re-hone my blade after some poor stropping. This is a setback but I knew stropping would be an adventure. I am using a 4000/8000 grit whet stone but it does not seem to work. Should I be using 1000 grit instead? Thanks.

what brand of hones are you using?
if the spine was taped at the previous honing you're just creating double bevel and not touching the edge.
if that's not a problem, the coarser hone will not improve things just do more damage, so i wouldn't go that way until you've figured out what is the issue.
