    Default Honing Question

Afternoon Gents, I am fairly decent at honing my razors but I do not have a high grit stone. My only stone is a 1k/6k. I can get a razor shave ready but it's not as comfortable as razors I've bought shave ready. Should I try doing more passes on my 6k? Can I keep my razors I bought shave ready? I do have a nice TM 3" Red Latigo strop, should I be doing more passes on the strop? Thanks for any advice.

Sounds like you need to progress further with higher grits. Abrasive pasted strops and/or higher grit stones are the way to go.

Every stone can give certain sharpness. when you got the maximum out of your stone after that doesn't matter how many more strokes you make edge will not get finer.
you will need to have higher grit stone.

There are two parts to my answer.

    1) As you get better and better, your edges off the same hones will get better and better. It's hard to say what percentage of the maximum potential you are currently getting off your hone, so it's tough to know how much better you could do off that hone.

    2) Most people shave off an 8k or higher, and I definitely think you should get another finer hone.

I see you are in Rochester. If you want to stop by and play with hones some time, drop me a PM. We can compare your 6k to a Naniwa 5k and 8k, and you can play with a few finishers to see what you like.
