On all that I have had, I have taken the stone down about 1/8 inch and the grainy or gritty has been gone for the duration.

Then its back to the sandpaper for me I don't think I got more than a mm or two down.

AS mentioned early Norton is the one of the consistent and easy to learn hone. get it clean up an you will love it.gl
