bugger it...
well guys I have taken your advice onboard and i know it wasnt mildew, I have lapped the living p**s out of the 8000 and nothing other than a uniform colour has been accomplished, i cant seem to get to the bottom of these little rocks at all, but guys thank you for all the wisdom you have left for me and I will be using it in its various forms.
I will see what happens next as I have other hones to take the place of the 8000 and have had a varied amount of success, the stones I have are natural and very attractive if I do say so myself....lol...just got to master them....
Thanks again guys,much respect....simon

So what does Norton have to say about all of this? I would assume it's a manufacturing flaw.

Nortons action
well i sent the same pics to them and called them in texas . The photos then were sent around and i got an email saying the stone will be replaced and a flattening stone included at no charge.
I am waiting to see when the new stones arrive......so far Norton / Saint-Gobain have been excellent, in correspondance and on the telephone.
And thats it...regards,simon

So I know this is a very old thread...it's been dead for years, but I wonder how all of this turned out. This thread came up in a google search re: norton stones, and after reading through it I wanted to know if they really stood behind their product. Thanks.

As Simon said in his post, they stood by their product, Norton is still the recommended hone here for beginners and pros alike.

I saw that they were sending, but wondered why there wasn't a follow up that he actually did get a replacement. Might not be active anymore. I know Norton's are highly regarded here on SRP. Highly priced too (everywhere).

Heh My assessment is not to say they're over-priced. It's merely the perspective from my wallet! But I'm also moving Friday to a new state (Iowa), looking at a wife who's nearly 8 mos pregnant, and just laid out a fair chunk of change (from my perspective) on shaving goodies. It's all relative.
