Thanked: 1936Some abused blades need "radical intervention", I've had uneven spines, grinds, bevels, spines & bevels, and so on. If it's the spine, i'll use the tape for addressing the issue, but always tell an owner that I did so that they hopefully will pass it on if I'm not the one to re-hone the blade later. I try to really fix the blade/edge if at all possible so that the owner never has to deal with it again. I always tell a owner what my idea is & they make the ultimate decision on what I tell them whether to proceed or not. I have also returned blades to owners as well if it's something I don't want to get into.
Sometimes I'll get a blade sent to me (probably an auction blade) to "just be honed". I inspect it or start on the blade with a few passes on a stone and quickly learn there is much more going on with the blade. If it's a simple fix, I don't bother the owner, but if it is going to take a lot of my time or the blades material, I will contact the owner.
Here recently I've been getting more and more of these blades with off grinds like they were seconds & boxed up...only to be let out into the market after surge in interest in shaving with a straight.
Have you noticed this as well?Southeastern Oklahoma/Northeastern Texas helper. Please don't hesitate to contact me.
Thank you and God Bless, Scott

Thanks, lots of valuable info there
I'm afraid I actually have experienced that myself.
I am not a Honemeister, nor do I wish to become one, but I do try to help out if a local guy has problems.
A couple of those have been like what you describe.
My only solution to that has been to refer them to a more experienced honer than me.
One had a bent spine. It was bent 4,8mm to the left, and it was sold as a NOS in perfect condition.
I have no fix for thatBjoernar
Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years....
