A Helpful Hint (And a Thank You to Randy)
I must admit, every so often, a problem will come along with a razor that stumps me. I'm terribly appreciative of the members here for their help. For this particular problem, Randydance helped me out.
I got a brand new (NOS, anyway) Filarmonica 6/8 square point. Beautiful razor, and to me, Fillys are the equal of any razors ever made. Come with about the worst factory edges ever, though.
Well, I get the thing. start honing it, and it hones up nicely. Then, I notice the razor has a "frown" in it. Dammit, I don't have frowns in my razors!(particularly new ones) I've handled hundreds, and honed almost as many, and I've never had a frown in my life. I've had a few that had frowns when I got 'em, but I worked that frown upside down.
This one stumped me. I flattened out the edge again, started all over and everything. Did this 3 times! Every time I honed it, I always got a frown in the same place.
Flattened my stones, checking them on a granite plate. No help.
Tried putting pressure in a different spot...no dice
Well, to make a long story longer, I talked to Randy. He told me to put the blade flat on the granite plate. Sure enough, the whole edge wasn't making contact with the hone. It had an uneven spine. Of the hundreds of razors I've handled, and the scores I've honed, this is the first one I've ever had with this problem, so it kinda threw me for a loop.
I talked with Ross cutlery again today. I told Allan everything I'd done with it, and he told me to return it to them and he'd replace it. Thankfully, I made "notes" (at Randy's suggestion), so that I could tell him everything that had been tried to get this razor right. Thanks to Ross cutlery for offering to replace a nearly irreplaceable razor, and to Randy, for pointing me in the right direction to diagnose the problem. I'm always learning, and am grateful for those around here who know more, and can help with such vexing quandaries.

Thanks for the tip, Joe. Randy is a top-notch guy and he knows his stuff. It's good to mention it from time to time for him to know how much he's appreciated by the SRP community.
