The tape is old. I thought that could be the reason. Off to buy new, 3M electric tape.

    Thanks bro.

No worries, you'll find the adhesive on your new roll of 3M tape to be much less of a hassle, and you'll pull it off without any residue left behind. Keep us posted of how it's going!

I've been using the blue Scotch brand electrical tape for months without a problem. I recently switched over to the black 3M tape, and it certainly does leave a residue. I have found that I can use the tape itself to lift off the residue by just dabbing the tape on the blade, but I'm headed back to the blue tape. Never had the issue with the blue tape.

This thread has inspired me! After remembering that yesterday afternoon I had resorted to coating the spine of my razor with mineral oil prior to taping it with the black tape, I went out today and bought some Scotch Professional Grade #35 Vinyl Electrical Tape in blue, orange, and yellow. These have never left any residue at all, and now I have eliminated one more unnecessary step in honing, cleaning off the black residue.

Great stuff, thanks for the experimenting and telling us about it, I'm going to try the scotch professional #35 and see how it works.

There must be different types of 3M tape, depending on where it's manufactured I guess, because I have never had a residue left by my 3M tape that I purchase in Hong Kong.
