Thanked: 0Norton 4K Scratches
When I finished lapping the 4k side of my 4k/8k with black wet/dry 600 grit paper I ended up with a sort of black shadow on my hone. Randy told me to get rid of this completely (I originally thought it was from the pencil I used to mark it up) and so I grabbed a pumice stone and go the stone back to pure white. However, I then noticed there were some scratches on the hone at one end. They are run in the long direction and are create some small grooves. I'm guessing this can't be good for honing. I tried lapping the stone for a bit but the scratches didn't come out. Should I just keep lapping until those grooves are gone? I did find a way to lap with the sand paper without getting any marks (do it under running water).
Any tips for getting the grooves out quickly?
Thanks,
John

i would definitely keep laping the stone with the sandpaper, 600 till the groves are out. try a figure 8 pattern while lapping it. when the groves are all out, i'd prolly even put pencil back on it and lap it flat again just incase you pushed too hard getting the groves out and made it uneven. it seems you pushed too hard with the pumice stone and put the groves into it. the norton will always get colourful junk on it from lapping it, but usually it comes right off running it under water and rubbing it with your hand. it should really feel smooth and flat, the 4k side will be more rough and the 8k sides almost feels perfectly smooth...almost. when you are done lapping it try just water and rubbing with your hand.
don't forget to soak your norton before using it,lapping it. 20min i think is what the directions say. and then leave it out to dry for couple days before putting it away so it drys out.
i think i used 1000grit sandpaper on my 8k side but the 600 should do you fine.

ps. the black snow woudln't be from the pencil, it would be from the sandpaper/stone. when you do the yellow side of the norton it is yellow snow/slurry.

Thanked: 0Thanks! I'll give that a try and hopefully it will work out. The 8k side is just fine...very smooth and solid yellow.

Don't worry about the scratches, they are from the pumice stone... I have them on my 8000 side too, and they don't affect the honing process. Only mine are circular, that is how I lap the hone with the pumace. See, this whole sr thing can be fun
