Back honing on stones?
Just wondering about this because I know that people hone with paste they use a back hone or stropping stroke. And the reason I ask is that I was having trouble with lifting during my normal X strokes. When I started back honing I was more consistant throughout the stroke and finally got an edge worth shaving with. I understand many paths to the same destination, but I am wondering the pros and cons of this method.
Thanks for any feedback.

I experimented with it but it did not offer any andvantages.

Thanked: 13245Yep +1+2 I agree with those guys above,, There are a few uses for it at the beginning of the honing process with problem blades,,and one use in the 3-2-1 finish on a Shapton 30k but other then that I haven't really used it..
The next question might be "But is it bad" ???
You have to get into the plasticity of metal and get very technical but the short answer is "Yes is can give a harsh edge instead of a smooth shave"
But as you said, many roads lead to sharp, so perhaps it is working with your honing stoke ????? keep working both ways and keep trying to get the smoothest feeling edge for your face.. Perhaps more like a Kamisori finish, both directions, then just a few edge leading finish strokes ????

This is helpful. I will continue to practice normal X strokes, not with my Henckels. I will get a sacrificial blade to practice with. Maybe I will try a few edge leading finish strokes on the Naniwa 12K before I go to the stop... This is the most helpful group of people...

Just an update. I took 10 edge leading laps on the 12K, 10 on .5 diamond sprayed felt, 20 rough leather, and 60 on premium I leather and tested on the right cheek and OMG how friggen smooth. You guys are awesome...
