I use the diamond pastes and also some other pastes without any diamond.

I do believe that the diamond pastes leave a razor feeling "harsher" than the other abrasives. I do not mean coarse. The other pastes leave an edge that feels "smoother" to my skin.
This is not a statement on sharpness, but rather one of feel against the skin.

This is entirely subjective and personal.YMMV

Thanks Randy. I am also considering "blasphemy" and going for a paddle strop, so I am reviewing all of the options.

I think you need to do a double blind test.

Did anybody actually try these glass-stones and post an opinion anywhere? Sound like it is an interesting alternative to pastes, although i can't say i would ever pay for the 30k one!

Joe Lerch has posted some comments about his 16k glassstone. He liked it.

I've been using my 8k and 15k ceramic shaptons for awhile now.

The 8k ceramic is a generally useful hone, it produces a much finer edge than the 8k norton. The 8k norton is about 3 microns, the 8k shapton is about 1.8 micron, or around 11k on the shapton scale. It produces an edge that feels quite similar to a boron carbide paddle (BC is also about 11 micron).

The 15k ceramic hone is a bit more specialized, it is tricky to use on softer razors because the suction and stiction is so high that the razor wants to hop and skip. I generally don't take my older Sheffields and Solingens past the S8K. But on the really hard razors like the Friodurs, better TI's and a few others it produces an edge that is just a tich less refined than chrome oxide. I still use chrome oxide on them for good measure, but if you were to hand me otherwise identical razors I wouldn't trust myself to tell you which one was finished on the chrome oxide and which one on the S15K.
