    Default Placing hone on towel

    Hi guys.

I bench hone on a small table and place my hones on a folded towel.

This allows the hone to rock a little and prevents the blade from riding
along the edge should you raise or lower the blade a bit.
Also, the towel catches the water and slurry.

This is just how I hone and thought I would pass it along.

Does anyone else use a similar method?

Could a mod please move this to the honing forum?

    Thank you

I do, as well, the only problem I have is if I'm using a 2-sided hone, like my norton 4/8, I get lint when switching sides. That's my only problem with it.

I do, too. Thankfully, my Norton 4k/8k has a truly cursed 4k side so I never use it with razors anymore.

Axel-I'm just curious what's wrong with your Norton 4k side. Maybe I got lucky, but the one I got laps up flat and smooth, and hones great. I have heard of inconsistencies on some, though...

It may be just me, but my 4k side doesn't seem to be very effective. My 8k side with slurry works like a dream, though.

I also place hones on a small hand towel, not to thick, and not folded. Works well for me because I hone with almost no pressure. It keeps the area clean and water doesn't run everywhere.

    Later,

Something is wrong with that picture. The 4K should be very effective. Got any pictures of your hone. Maybe a good lapping?

Ive only tried honing 3 times. The first two attempts were on a towel (lint, lint, lint) until I realized that the norton case can also hold the stone on top. A truly blonde moment. Never did get my practice razor as sharp as I would want to be able to shave with.
