Thanked: 0sharpening in nyc
hi,
my boyfriend received a straight razor a couple of years ago and never used it. recently he expressed that he would love to use it but it needs to be sharpened. i was wondering if there's any place in nyc that would be able to sharpen the razor well? i've searched the threads but a lot of the posts are a bit old. any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you.

When I first got into straight razors, I bought some vintage ones (off of ebay) and attempted to have several knife sharpeners in my area sharpen them for me. I think I tried 4 places, all of which assured me that they knew how to sharpen a razor and it would work perfectly - not the case at all. Your best bet is to send it out to one of the honers listed in the Classifieds section (under Member Services). They usually have quick turn-around, especially if you choose one near you.

Dylan (Holli4pirating), Joe (JoeD) and Karen (CarrieM) are all great honers and are in Northen NY as I recall, Rochester IIRC. Any of them will be able to put a great edge on the blade for you.
You can contact them via PM on SRP, thats probably the easiest way to get in touch.

What's funny about this is, the night before you posted this I honed a razor about as good as anything I've ever shaved with, period. I was quite proud of my work and your post gave me even more confidence.
Last night I tried finishing 2 razors I was working on, with painstaking concentration to detail and ease... and both suck.
C is for consistency and I'm almost there... But thank you for your vote of confidence.

I keep getting emails from kind persons asking if I still live in NYC and if I would hone a razor for them. Unfortunately I no longer live on the east coast and have returned to Las Vegas. And if you're going to send your razor to me, you might as well send it to Maximilian.
