Default Straight acts weird on hone

So...I'm honing my dubl duck on 4k...no problem there.
Going to 8k, leading blade towards me, no problem, flipping it and when going in direction away from me blade seems to slightly jump/skip like there's something on the hone.
This happens only with that straight all others "act" normal.

    I don't know, Goc.
Someone will have the answer tomorrow, I'm sure.
Did you try looking at that side with a magnifier?

Going to bed, hope you find the answer.

I agree, look with magnification. If the bevel is incomplete on one side you could be breaking off pieces of a fine burr that you are feeling on the 8k.

I would immediately look at the blade, wipe the blade and rinse the stone. I usually also rotate stones 180 degrees once or twice in a honing session. Are the edges of your hones beveled? Worried about a small piece of stone breaking off and getting on the honing surface...the culprit should be obvious. If not, change the angle of the razor, with more heal leading.

That happens all the time with my razors, and only on the finer grit hones. In all likelihood, that skipping you describe is suction.

If you put a rough piece of plywood on top of smooth glass, you could pick it up easily. If you put a smooth piece of glass on another smooth piece of glass, you would have difficulty picking up the top piece. There is little air between the two planes of glass. In order to lift, air has to move between the two panes. And, this suction, or surface tension, or whatever it should be called makes separation harder.

Something quite similar happens with straight razors. Your finer grit hones are like smooth glass, and your blade is like glass. When you pick the razor up to rotate it, there can be very noticeable pull. If you don't understand what is happening, it is easy to misinterpret. I know! For I too keep feeling my hone for the something on the hone that I never found.

By the way, this phenomenon happens most often with very flat, straight blades. It isn't as noticeable with smiling blades.

Might be something else. I suspect not.

This also sometimes happens when you pop a few arm hairs and they end up on the hone, it may not catch the one way but feels like hitting a pothole the other. Keep the stone clean.
