Barber Hones
I am interested in the barber hones and after much perusing have found that there is no single resource that really lays out approximate grit sizes or even has discussions on the quality of various brands of barber hones. However, I have noticed that there are at least a few people out there who have good ideas or approximations about quality as well as grit sizes of at least some barber hones. I am hoping that these people could come out and post their knowledge on this thread, and maybe at some point we could put together a reasonable resource detailing some of the various barber hones out there based on forum members' experiences.

Thanked: 79Actually, if you search back, we have done this before, either here or on yahoo, but I think both...
and for the most part it turns out it is difficult, because most of the information that could have helped us get the grit(s) down to a number is not available anymore. Most if not all of the people who knew the actual recipes of what was in the old barber's hones are dead and *I think* took their recipes with them to the grave.
As such, we can only approximate.
I would say most of mine range between 6k and perhaps 12k comparative grit, most being more towards the former. Skute, Swaty....then some are a little higher...(Dubl Duck dry....) then a few, like my Itsapeech, are almost like glass and have extremely fine grit.
Experiment and learn....
If you are curious about a particular hone, however, let us know. If it is one I have, I will do my best to give my experience with it, as I'm sure, will anyone else here.
Hope this helps....
