Restoration stones
So I'm considering buying the stones necessary for restoration in a few weeks, but I was wondering what sort of price I'm looking at.
I checked ebay (gasp!) and it'll cost me aroundabout 300 for each of the stones necessary for it. But I'm wondering if there's a better alternative, like, anywhere I could perhaps buy second hand stones?

What exactly do you want to do, and what stones are you looking at?
Since you are in the honing section, not the workshop, I'm assuming you mean major bevel resetting/chip removal/frown removal/ etc. I personally do most of that on my Chosera 1k (often with a slurry of some sort), but drop to a (well broken in) DMT 325 if things get really serious. I can't imagine going much lower, but even if you do, nothing should be that expensive. Unless it's just because you are in Australia.

I want to get my hands on some old un-honed razors and get them shave ready.
I checked out those stones, will I be able to do this with them? Also, what sort of slurry do you use?

Thanked: 46300 EACH?!? What kind of stones are you trying to get? I have three King stones, 1200, 4k and 8k that cost me $201 combined, INCLUDING postage and as far as I can tell the weakest part of the set is the idiot using them.

The hones I mentioned are for serious prebevel and bevel work. For the average ebay razor, you only need to set the bevel and take it from there. Personally, I like a 1k, a 4kish, an 8kish, and a finisher. Others have different preferences. As Mick said, your cost per hone should not be $300 or anywhere close, and I'm still wondering what you were looking at.

Thanked: 46That's a substantially different final figure. I'm just waiting for the PHIGs to come back into stock where I got my King stones, and some more cash, and I'll pick one up to finish the set.

Thanked: 983Bit of a faux par, I'd say. I think I spent a total of $250 for my complete set of two double sided and one PHIG, and I know I paid too much. Being much smarter now, I would get away at least $50 better off, or most certainly have higher quality stones for my money.
