Thread: Amalgamite Barber Hone - which side is fine, which is coarse?

Beginner's question:

I just got an Amalgamite barber hone. One side is gray, the other side is reddish-brown. Both feel smooth to me -- the gray side has a little bit more "tooth". I haven't flattened it, yet.

Before I make a mistake:

. . . Which side is the "coarse" side?

. . . Which side is the "finishing" side?

The side with the print is usually the finer side of the barber-hones.
I don't have an Amalgamite, but on the few I have, the fine side has print on it.

Yeah, they do seem to fetch rather high prices on the bay.
Them Aussie wood choppers seem to really go all in to have one
