Thanked: 69yeah norton...
i getting my razors shave ready with a 1k/6k jap waterstone i picked up at the local woodworking store and then my c12k along with .5micron diamond pasted strop.....
and i have been getting fairly good shaves BUT having fits with razor burn....
i bought a norton 4k/8k out of the classifieds here and it came in today *(woo hoo christmas in sept!!).....
i put it in water to soak and ran to the bathroom to get the worsty pipe razor....
1 piece of tape *(more to protect the patina of the blade than anything else).... then i honed it up.... 4k for a few laps... then to the 8k side..... working it with ever decreasing pressure till the 100x scope i have showed me a nice polished edge.... then i pulled out the c12k *(which oddly enough felt rough compared to the 8k) and put a couple drops of .5micron diamond slurry and honed it some more with decreasing pressure......
.5micron cotton strop for a few very light passes.... then the latigo.....
wow... THE best shave i have gotten ever from a straight..... NO razor burn.....
happy happy joy joy.....
my very heart felt thanks to DOOM for the great deal on the hone and the swift shipping.....

Yes, the Nortons do rock.
I collect different stones, but rarely break away from my honing routine of Nortons, through the Shapton 16K. The few razors that I have brought to shave ready, about 24 to 27 since February, had all their mysteries solved by the Nortons.
Next month, I will start playing with Chinese waterstones and more experimentation with my barber hones.
