    Default Norton "Prep Stone"

Norton sells a prep stone, or rubbing stone for use with their water stones. Has anyone used it, does it work well for our puposes?

    Thanks

Yes, and yes. I only use it on the 4k, though, when I want it to cut faster, like working out a small nick. After that, I rinse the stone and use without slurry.

Yes, I've used it and I've sold dozens with positive feedback from several customers. It's no more than a "synthetic Nagura stone" made of aluminum oxide.

Most of my personal experience has been with use on the 8K side of my 4K/8K waterstone. I use it primarily to speed up the process of getting the slurry started when I'm only doing a razor or two.

Some of my customers tell me they use it on the 4K side as well with the same results, but with added benefit of smoothing out the stone in lieu of using 1200 grit wet/dry sand paper. This is an area that I have alsolutely no experience and would greatly appeciate some comments from more experienced members.
