Default A no-tape to tape touch up

At this point in the game I've never used tape while honing. After chatting with Maxi here at SRP, I thought I'd give it a shot with a gold wash Dovo I have.

I understand there's a lot of work involved in taking a taped razor and then honing without - you have to remove a lot of metal and basically reset the bevel.

My question is the opposite, when I'm ready to touch up an already sharp razor, going from no tape to tape, I'm assuming it can be done easily - just a short time on an 8K should do the trick and polish from there, no?

you are technically adding a microbevel, not much work at all.

Easy as pie as Stefan already pointed out.... But also just for others following along, to go from taped to non-taped honestly is not a ton of work, it takes about 20 laps on a Norton 4k as a reference... You are talking about less then 1 degree of difference, normally on a very small amount of edge...

But it would be more on a wedge though?

Yes assuming the wedge is spine worn, but any type of honing is more with them

Yes, have you seen my elbow? It seems to have been taken by a man named Fenney.
I wouldn't even drop to the 8k if the razor just needs a polish.

Curious. I reset a bevel using tape at the sharpening stone. For daily stopping common sense would be no tape. What about when I do a refresh on felt - should I use tape ?

Personally, I've had good results touching up on wool felt without tape, even when I've used tape on the rocks. Balsa touch ups I have used tape, if the razor was honed with tape, because of the hardness, also with good results.
