sal, a hone is a must if he is intended to use his razor on a regular basis. You cannot skip it.

Thanked: 0I vote with Feng_Li. I think most folks can easily learn to put a half decent edge on a razor given a bit of understanding, proper instruction on the technique and patient practice. ( This is meant as encouragement to anyone who might be reading this and struggling a bit. You can do it. Be patient and ask questions if you have them.) Getting the "cuts like a hot knife through butter" edge can take a lifetime to master. ;-)
