Thanked: 346norton variation
I'm watching Lynn's video where he's doing circles for dechipping razors, and I was amazed at how fast his 4k was pulling steel off the razor. I've done this same procedure several times on ebay razors, and my 4k doesn't cut nearly as quickly as his, he's getting as much metal after 20 circles as I would get after 100. The 8k will get black quickly, and the shapton does too, but the norton 4k side doesn't.
I think I now know why pyramids never worked for squat for me :-(

Pressure could be the key. A decent amount of pressure is needed when dealing with a damaged/very dull blade. First you remove all the damage and as it gets sharper, you start to reduce the pressure.

Thanked: 346Could be pressure, or maybe the swarf is dropping between the granules in the hone (my 4k side is very porous, it looks like low-density styrofoam). But the 8k side and my shapton get black very quickly, even with moderate pressure.

Mine looks the same and the wide spacing makes it a fast cutter. Even though it doesn't turn black on me either, it still cuts very quickly. Even though little to no pressure is what's needed for touchup honing, when you're dealing with a dead edge, you need to put a little muscle into it (without deforming the edge, ofcourse).

And why would that be?
