Default How far to tape up the shank?

Hey, found a ton of resources on taping, but nothing on how far up the shank to take the tape...does it even matter? I'm assuming if the blade has a shoulder that's where you take it to - if no shoulder than you can go a little further.

Is this the case or can you just tape midway up the shank regardless of the shoulder?

    Thanks!

I only tape the area of the spine equal to the length of the blade itself. The shank should never touch the hones, so there's no need to protect it from scratching.

On a double shoulder blade, tap to the shoulder where the tang meets the blade (ie, both shoulders). On a shoulderless blade, the tape can go further.

Hi Bud Gl has a youtube video that shows exactly this.....check his channel out.

I don't see how it makes any difference. You shouldn't be honing the stabiliser anyway.

That's my point. If you're honing stroke extends over the stabiliser which is thicker than the blade, it will raise the heel off the stone if the tang is taped or not.

I like to tape all the way up to the second or third knuckle on my honing hand. This helps to hold my hand to the shank and limits accidentally dropping the razor. I used to tape all the way past my elbow, but it hurt pulling the hair out like that.
Now I try to save money: wherever it lands past the blade, I don't care.
Unless of course it is shoulderless, I will then tape my noe to my ears using scotch tape, then if it has a thumb-notch I will ball up a small amount on the tip of the scales for good luck.

Umm, wait, no it still doesn't matter; wherever the end lands, that's how long it is.
