Corundum has been around for a long time. It is far to coarse for straight razors with the exception that their finest may be suitable for a 1000 grit .

    Hope this helps,

Thanks Randy, I had in mind to try one out if no one could have told me anything about it.

    Thanks Redwood, interesting comparison!

Herr Ullrich doesn't rate the Apex 820 very highly with only 2 pluses!

True, but at the bottom of the page he recommends it, a japanese 8k water stone and the black Arkansas for razors.

Thanks Redwood. I got confused by the difficult rating system Herr Ulrich uses.

To tell you the truth, I don't quite understand it either

I have studied the table and worked it out as follows: 1st column is for honing results, 2nd column is for cutting speed in relation to grit size, 3rd column is for wear of the stone itself, 4th column is his overall judgement of the stone.
The numerals in the 1st 3 colums are: 1 for excellent and 6 for very poor.
The 4th column works with pluses, I presume ++++ is excellent an + is not so good.

But it is weird that he gives the Apex a lower overall rating, but then recommends it anyway. Like you said yourself.
