Thread: taped chip removal

Hi, Please can someone with experience of this help me,
I am working on my first proper restoration project on a Joseph Allen & Sons, it says mediuim hollow ground on the blade, so far I have hand sanded the blade to a nice shine, however there was a chip on the edge of about 2mm deep and 1.5mm so to remove I took it to my norton 220 and put 4 layers of tape started honing and though this would take a long time so I lifted the spine to a 80 degree angle and varied the angles till the chip was removed....now I put the spine back on the hone and continued... then decided to go to the 1k to set the bevel and removed the tape and put on 1 layer and after a while it still was having no effect so I though maybe need another layer of tape, so continued with 2 layers but still no effect.....

Does this mean that I have made a double bevel on the edge from going from 4 layers to 2 and no ammount of honing will touch the edge as it isn't making contact with the hone? I tried the magic marker and it was removing it although evenly, should I go back to the 220 with 2 layers of tape for a few passes to possibly remove the double bevel and then return to the 1k? I have stopped for now as don't want to ruin the razor given the number of hours spent sanding it...

If you had magnification, an eye loupe or a microscope, you could see exactly what you do have. Some of those old Sheffields have some tough steel in them and take more time. If you do circles with a layer of tape ..... I would use one personally, and replace it if it wears...... you will eventually get to an edge. Just watch your blade profile and don't put a frown into it.

i do have an eye loupe is either 20x or 30x not sure as marking has worn away, when i look through it I see the scratch lines, no microchips other than that not sure what i'm looking for?
If I go to one layer of tape and do circles on which hone are you refering too, the 220 or 1k?

Put on 3 layers of tape, and hone it untill it passes the thumbnail test on the 220. In my reading, you basically breadknifed the razor, and it will take a lot of time with a meaty razor like that to get a bevel once again. When you pass the TNT, go with one layer of tape, and the 1k side untill it shaves arm hair, and then proceed with your normal routine.

Don't be impatient, it will take a lot of time to undo the effect of breadknifing, thats why everyone is against it regarding new guys.

thank you for the advice, I guess I was breadknife but not like sawing bread more like spreading on butter action... what i don't understand is putting on the 3 layers then getting it pass the TNT then removing 2 layers of tape so 1 remains and then moving to the 1k - as won't the angle of the bevel be set with the spine slightly higher with 3 layers and when you reduce to 1 layer the spine is now lower and therefore the angle of the bevel will change and won't be contacting the hone in the same place as it was with 3 layers and then I won't get it to sharpen as the very edge won't be contacting the 1k?

You need to vary the angle on the way back down, you started at 80° now drop to 60° then 40° then 20° then 3 layers then 1/0 layer(s)...

If you go to Google and search "gssixgun honing" you are going to find a step by step video and some others from the Meets that show the technique.. I don't link them here or post them here just because it is such a pain to explain when people don't read or listen to the directions....

Many thanks, I have seen your great video which is what gave me the inital confindence to try this technique as you make it look so easy, I should of mentioned I did lower the angles as the chip started 'shrinking'... though I should of watch it before trying the job in hand, as it was a few weeks before... I'll watch again and see if I can pick up from where the razor is at..
