Damn, I really would like to try it out though. Just put excessive force on the edge and rub it against the stone until sharp, how can you go wrong with that.

I've got to get one of those weathered boards to run the edge through after I sharpen on the 4/8k ..... that must be the 'secret'

Just out of curiosity, why shouldn't you hone with a trailing edge?

I haven't tried his method. OTOH, all instructions that came with hones made for over a hundred years, instructions given in barber manuals published for an equal amount of time, not to mention tutorials by razor honemiesters (if you'll pardon the expression) say to hone with the edge leading. So either he has discovered a technique that was heretofore unknown, or it is not an effective method of honing a razor and is inferior to the tried and true traditional method. I may give it a try just for the heck of it ..... without running the edge through the board or cutting off the end of my belt.

Honing will remove metal from the edge. If you hone edge leading, the junk will be scraped off and stay on the hone.
If you go edge trailing, the metal is abraded in a different direction. There is a chance that the junk will stay attached to the edge instead of falling off, and if it falls off, it might take a piece of edge with it.

For knives I don't know if it makes much of a difference, but for razor edges it may.

Wow who knew it was that easy. I am not too sure about slicing through a belt every time I hone though.I guess the Jnat was just too pretty to risk putting metal to it. Now I just need to follow these directions about 45-50 times to get all my razors nice and sharp. Who is going to add the 3 finger test to the Wiki? I suppose all the honemeisters will be going broke now that the secret is out.

Obviously a knife guy & not a razor guy. I hope none of our "guys" try this silly method, kind of like honing on a concrete cinder-block.

Murray cut his belt with his neck knife, not the razor.

I'd just hate to keep buying belts whenever I hone.

trailing strokes are not the problem, his technique however IMHO is huge problem.He sharpens knives the same way.
