hi
i have a 8k and a 12k chinese water stones,is it possable to hone a dull razor back to shaveready
only using these stones,and how meny passes on each stone will i need to do,i have been straight shaving for 3 mths and was given the stones by a mate.thanks.....

It depends on what you mean by dull and the quality of the stones. If they are known brands of stones and the razor was usable and is just starting to pull, then it is possible. If the razor is a wedge with a visible flat spot...you better have a LOT of time. If the stones have inclusions, improperly marked grit or are small I doubt it possible. Remember, they also have to be properly lapped as well.

Thanked: 1587Anything is possible. The real question is "is it advisable to try it?". As mentioned above, a lot depends on where the razor's edge is at.
The only way you are going to find out is to try it for yourself and see if those two stones meet your honing needs. If they do not then you will have to get some more stones in the appropriate grit ranges. However, as it stands at the moment, the only person who can really answer your question is you. We can only really speculate.

Thanked: 6thanks guys my friend has a spare 5k i can have for 35 euros yep i live in spain and since thay closed the 2 straight razor factorys 5 yrs ago
it is ipossable to get rnything here. so will a 5k be enough to set beval ect.....

Most would initially use a 1K for bevel setting as a starter since it's fast. originally I only had a Norton 4K/8K and used the 4 to set many a bevel it just takes longer as will your 5K.

Thanked: 6thanks one more thing i've just found on a website a belgian blue waterstone for the same money would this be a better buy, i never let my razor go realy dull i use the 12k like a barber hone but would like something to have just incase.or to try n restore a shit ebay perchase ?
