5x on the 8k, didnt like it did 5 more smoother took it to the coti on water for 5 stropped cotton and horse hide and back in business. Guess i was a little over zealous with my first attempt?

dunno why its more intimidating to refresh an edge than it is to take one from bevel to finish. live and learn.
Glad to hear you got it back in shape . After you do it a few more times , it won't be so intimidating .

When refreshing I never do anything more than x-strokes and/or rolling x-strokes on water, or on a Coticule with light slurry, followed by water.

Yes, razors aren't brutes. No need to whip them (or I should say hone them) into submission. Usually they need to be treated with delicacy and finesse.

I never let a razor get to a point where it starts to pull or skip. As soon as the comfort starts to wain it's time to get the hone out. I always start with a high grit do a few strokes and see how it does. If need be a few more.

When you are doing a touch-up and find yourself doing a legion of strokes something is very wrong and you need to re-access what's going on.

This is why I like Barber's hones so much. Once the razor feels a little less comfortable than it used to, just put lather on the barber's hone and make 5 strokes, you're done.

If the finish isn't as smooth as you want or you need a natural stone finish then go to your coticule with a diluted lather or oil and make 30 strokes or so and you're up a level in smooth.
