Hi guys,

I'll apologise up front there are probably a number of newbie mistakes to be corrected, but I just need a sanity check!

I have one of the naniwa std 1k/3k combo stones (red/tan).

The 1k (red) side seems to be strangely hard, just wondering if this is normal at all?

For instance, I have rubbed down both sides with the slurry stone from my PHIG, and the 3k (tan) side immediately raises a tan coloured slurry, and also this starts to form in use. However the 1k (red) side forms no slurry initially, and eventually forms a whiteish PHIG slurry, presumably as the 1k grit wears the PHIG down. Surely the 1k waterstone shouldn't be hard enough to resist a good rubbing down with such a hard slurry stone?

I'm thinking of re-lapping the 1k side tonight, but wanted to throw it open to a few opinions first.

I have once managed to successfully hone using this stone, although I'm starting to wonder if I actually ended up setting the bevel on the 3k side!

Thanks in advance
P
