Ill play along and do a writeup. I was planning on rehoning a bunch of my rotation anyway.

Ill play along and do a writeup. I was planning on rehoning a bunch of my rotation anyway.
I have never honed a razor before but was planning on giving it a try. I just got my Norton 4000/8000 in the mail yesterday. Something tells me I will be in the "try to avoid doing what he did" catagory for a while. This should be fun!
I am just about to purchase a 4k/8k norton. Can I tag along as a learning exercise?
Absolutely !!!!!
You new honers are most welcome on this, your journeys though out this might actually be the most beneficial for so many more of the new guys to SRP :p The better you document the better for you and other guys later, as they can learn from your Success :) and Failure :( thoughout the month...
I'll give it a try, I've only ever gone up to 8k but have only sharpened my razors once or twice myself
-Dan-
OK, Glen. I'm up for it.
Playing Devil's advocate though, I foresee someone who just blew a wad of cash on the latest/greatest finisher getting his nose out of joint after reading the findings.
You know the guy who drops a coupl'a K every year on new sticks and still can't break 80? Don't say to him; "Ya know Hogan and Jones hit in the 60's with persimmon and blades."

Oh man....this thread is going to get crazy out of hand. I love it. :D
For those of you giving this a whirl, I'll try to post a new video on both the circle method and the pyramid method for reference. The only other consistent method I know of is to stay on the 4K until it cuts arm hair and then do 5-10 strokes on the 8K, strop and test shave and then tinker with an additional 1-3 strokes on the 8K as needed. All other methods welcome! The main thing for me is having a razor with the bevel set to start with. If we are going only off the 4K vs. a 1K for bevel setting, we will have some fun.
Damn, I don't log in for a few days and I miss the start of something really cool. I'm in, ill post on my results and methods asap.
Like a few others here, I've never attempted to hone. I have purchased some stones (including the required Nortons) but never actually made any attempts to hone.
If there ever was an excuse to, this is it. I'm in.
I'll miss my Oozuku edges, but this sounds like too much fun--I'm in as well! :)
I got one of my 2 razors picked out, the 8/8 1/4 grind Brian Brown, and will probably choose something hollow and German for the other :)
I've been wondering about something Lynn said. Are we going off a set bevel, or from bevel set to shave ready?
I have a couple restores (sans scales, anyone have any extras they don't want?) that will need start to finish, and a couple of users that will need rehoning, but the bevels of course were good when I got them.
To get the most out of this you want to kill the edge.. :gth
You can actually do that without destroying the bevel with a few TNT's
I do it with a very very light draw of the edge across the corner of a stone, -BUT- I don't recommend that to everyone :(
Like Lynn said earlier when you start honing on the 4k essentially you are creating a new bevel anyway..
Just try and make sure you are using just a Norton 4/8 edge and yer fine...
These are my two choices for the fun...
Both have been in my personal collection for quite some time... Both have not ever been re-honed they are still sporting the original edges that I put on them.. The Bengall was originally honed on the Norton 4/8 the Henckels I think I had bought the Shapton 16k by the time I bought it but can't really remember...

I also just picked up a new set of Nortons for this, (I needed/wanted them anyway) but I went seperate stones this time instead of the combo stone..
What an awesome Idea! Been dropping hints to the wifey that I wanted a norton combo for christmas. As a stone cold newb when it comes to honing I would love to join, but no way to know if I have the stones (heh heh) until christmas. I will enjoy watching though!
Hey Glen this raises an interesting question for me and i assume some other noobs as well..., are there any advantages/disadvantages to having the 4/8 combo or the individual 4 and 8 stones? and if so what do you perceive them to be??? I am really thinking i may go out a buy a combo just to join in on this even tho i as well have NEVER honed before but figure it may be an interesting challenge to start with just this stone since i see a lot of guys advise starting with JUST this stone anyway!
thanks!
Absolutely none whatsoever :) Benjamin
They cost more, but they last longer because there is more stone there... The 8k it is not even a consideration, my 4/8 has done a LOT of razors probably close to 3000 the 4k side is getting down there but still has many more razors to go... The 8k side I don't think has more than 1/16th of an inch gone from new...
I had promised this stone to a friend, when I decided to buy a new set, this adventure just prompted me to make the move, early and I had a gift card to Woodcrafter :) which just happened to have them in, and I just happened to be in Spokane anyway yesterday. :p Karma
But no I don't see any obvious advantages, just my mileage varied toward separate stones YMMV
I selected my two razors last night killed both edges on the top lip of a beer bottle, very lightly.
After work ill take pictures of the razors I picked, one is an ugly junker I picked to show you can do this with an antique find with ugly looks. It has some hone wear, not a problem.
I cleaned my norton last night in anticipation.
My two entries are:
7/8 Robuso 3/4 hollow
13/16 Bocker Inox full hollow

ok guys i have a question/ me working part time and going to highschool full time, restoring my truck leaves me a little short on cash to buy a norton hone with, ive heard you can completly hone a razor up on a barber hone if you have the patience adn time (utopia once said so ) do you think it would work if i use my laudies barber hone which i belive one side is 5-6k and the other is like 6-8 k adn if so can i join
if it helps i can write norton on the both sides of my hone
I think this time through let's stick with actual Norton's But I do like the idea of doing this again, it seems that many of the guys are into it and I actually like the idea of maybe using a Barber's Hone next time...
Simple easy solutions I love them...
Yes I know, this from the same guy that writes a Blog about Taking Honing to the Nth degree, :fim: LOL but I like all aspects of this hobby... From the Simple Solutions to the Crazy Minutiae
I am going to follow along with my new Norton 4k/8k, and a 5/8 Morley Hollow Ground I scored off ebay for $10.
Barry
We could always to a barber hone month later on Glen :) Now I have to buy one! Haha
All right here goes nothing....just ordered the Norton and I'M IN:y........like i said before this will be the start of my honing journey but i figure theres no better way to start than trial by fire and with all the great honers doing the same stone it will be great to have a step by step as i go!!!
I've been watching this thread with interest. I've been thinking about temporarily dropping my 12K and pasted strops from my honing progression to remove variables and focus on perfecting the results off of the 8K. So, in effect, I’ve been thinking of something similar. If the room isn’t already too crowded, I’d like to join January’s fun adventure.
You can write me up too Glen! Sanyi/jeness
I have two razors that were in the first 20 razors I have honed long ago, one I got from my Dad, and one from my Mom. I didn't shave with them for a while, and I have honed maybe 150-200 razors since, so I am sure they will accept the challenge :) I was thinking about rehoning them since a while, but this will be a good oppurtunity to do so. One is a 5/8 Clauberg, the other one is a 6/8 Henckels, both full hollow. This experiment should be fun :)
I put both you guys on the list :) welcome aboard
This is really shaping up into a really good cross section of shavers here...
Remember first shave day is Sunday Jan 1st
hehe why is this old song playing in my head now

I guess I need to finally put some scales on the restoration projects... I'll check back in the new year.
This is really tempting.
Especially considering I've gotten into a bit of a rut where I get a razor, loan it to Ogershok for honing, then clean it up and shave with it.
This method hasn't really polished my honing skills very much. :D
But even when I do hone my own, I'm in a diamond-plated rut. It would be really good to truly learn the Norton I've got (hell, I've even got the flattening stone). I'm not quite a rank beginner, but I've probably only successfully honed 5-6 blades.
But I'm thinking for my own fun, I'll use an old Greaves battleaxe of a wedge (sanity is overrated!) and one of those William Elliot blades with the MOP in the scales. Both have just been sitting around waiting for me to fix'em up. The Greaves will need some extra love since its spike is chipped off and there's a ding in the middle. The Elliot oughta balance out all that 'interesting' though. :)
And this will be an exercise in restraint since I've got an 1810 Wostenholm winging its way to me that probably won't get here until after the project starts.
Huh. That all sounds like I convinced myself to join in, doesn't it? I can always fail the class if life gets too stupid before it starts!
Count me in!

Is it possible to use just one razor? I really don't have that many to risk two, and yes, I mean risk. If so, I'll be in just to add the valueless commentary of someone who has used a hone less than 10 times.
Oh, BTW, typically I hone while also drinking German beer, so when I say I did 50 laps it was probably 5, or 500, or none, or I didn't even hone...
Carl
Im getting ready, here are my 2 razors that I will use. A 6/8 Boker King Attachment 85214Attachment 85215Attachment 85216Attachment 85217Cutter and a 5/8 Garantie. I love these 2 razors and this will be the first time in my one year of straight shaving that I will use the same razor for more than a couple shaves in a row. Im always going back and forth between the 10 razors that I have so far.
Question!
Should I ask questions about the Norton stones HERE, or in the Hones forum?
Either way Hones or here.. I have a funny feeling this thread is going become a rather large resource of info on honing with and the Norton hones themselves :) I have had some great PM's already on some cool variations on squeaking the most out of the edges off the 8k...
