OK, First Question! Is there any noticeable difference between the Norton's made in Mexico/Canada and the ones made in the USA?
I hope it's not cheating that I'm using a low-grit diamond plate to work the nicks out of this Greaves... But I don't think January is long enough to get them out on the 4k. :D
IME the 4k's that were Made in Mexico require a bit more Lapping than all the others
For info
I have seen the 4k's
Made in USA
Made in Mexico
Made in Italy
The 8k's I have only seen
Made in USA myself
Someone else please add to this info if you have it
The new ones I just bought are Italian 4k and American 8k I will be doing my first lapping on them tonight or tomorrow
I have both an 8k that the original box says "Saint-Gobain Abrasives, Worcester MA and then it says IMPORTED by Saint-Gobain Abrasives Canada and an 8k that says Made in USA. I don't know if that first one means it was made here, and shipped to Canada, or made in Canada and shipped here, or what?
Rules of the Game?
Second Question! I have 2 8K Norton stones. One that feels more "rough" (fresh lapped) and one super smooth from use without any recent lapping. Is it still "2 stones" if I use BOTH 8k's?
Alright you guys twisted my arm after only a handful of honings under my belt I definitely need this challenge. Though I am saddened I just got a PHIG for some finishing at a rummage sale the other day for $1. Oh well it'll wait to get used now. I'm going to go with a Greaves & Sons half hollow 5/8 and a Witte & Co. 5/8 half hollow. Both current restores I've been working on Guess I gotta get them polished and pinned this week. I'm super excited!!!!
If you are saying using 2 different 8k's on each razor I think your bumping the "Rules" hehehe keep in mind there are really no rules just like there are really no "Mattress Police" that come for you if you rip the tags off a mattress :rofl2:
I would use one 8k on each razor and see how that works myself.. re-read item 1 and 5 again in the first post :p
Getting ready! I lapped the norton today with the Norton lapping stone.
I laid out a grid in pencil on each side and went for it. Soaked the stones for about 30 minutes.
The 4k went well, but the 8k took forever!!! - but eventually it evened out.
Looking forward to jumping into January 2012 and learning to hone.
I've been watching gssixgun's youtube videos and getting familiar with the process..

Yup, for sure! You new guys who just acquired your Nortons be sure to lap them first. Look for Lapping 101 in the Wiki.
BTW, if your going to use sandpaper for lapping be sure to not use much pressure. You don't want to embed any of the sandpaper grit into the hone. Just be patient.
Yes, you need to lap the lapping stone that you will use to lap the Norton. But before you do this you need to lap the thing you'll use to lap the lapping stone. And before you do that you'll need to lap the thing you'll use to lap the thing you'll use to lap the lapping stone, and before that... :-) I'm currently lapping my glass topped table with another glass topped table...
On a serious side, apparently you do need to lap the lapping stone, but I didn't. I bought an 'Ice Bear Flattening Stone' from Carba-Tec on Magill road. It probably does need to be lapped...OTOH, I may lap the stone on wet and dry on the glass topped table, then re-draw the grid and lap with the lapping stone and I should be able to see if there's a need to lap the lapping stone...(maybe?)...
FWIW, I lapped my norton 4/8 on glass with wet and dry (360 grit). Did a fine job.
Thanks for that... I think. I may have to to go visit cabra tec.
This is going to be an interesting exercise that I will follow with interest.
My two DOVO's are in rotation and tweaked to perfection so I must reluctantly decline. Perhaps I will invest in another cheap, used blade for the next round of fun.
However, the Norton 4k/8k is certainly my go to combo for setting a new bevel and edge. I bet this is about all most SR users will need to get a great shave.
Question: Are you going to paste and strop following the Norton combo or just leather?
Gentleman,
My choice had been made.
On the left side we have a Puma 39 5/8 Pour Barbe tres dure!!
On the right we have a Geneva cutlery pyramid 7 5/8.
Both great shavers both edge have been killed.
Hopefully with some guidance i will be able to bring them back
to shaving conditions!!

Look what came today....

Of corse I had my DMT sent to work so I have to wait till tomorrow to do anything with it but. MUST. resist. till. then!!!!!
this is interested in my haste to open mine and post i then went back to read some posts i had missed and saw the above.....when i looked at mine it looks like the 220/1k was made in mexico and the 4/8k was made in Italy and the US......not that it really matters but is that the norm with Nortons?
I took delivery of a Norton combination hone today as well.
The two sides were manufactured in different locations.
The 4K side was Italian and the 8K side was made in the US.
This hone was very light and porous, very thirsty and an absolute dream to flatten compared to most others I have.
It came with a really coarse surface, and I had to lap away quite a bit of stone to get to good material.
Anyways, I'm putting a couple razors to it tonight, a wee familiarization before the JaNorton event:)
I just picked up two straight razors that I will be using. They are both vintage Boker's that appear to have blades in good condition. I'm guessing they will not have much of an edge set when they arrive. Do I understand correctly that I have to use the 4000 grit norton to set the edge? Are we allowed to use a 1000 grit norton to set the edge and then the 4000/8000 to get it (hopefully) shave ready? I didn't want to use my two razors I am currently shaving with because I didn't want to ruin them. This will be my first attempt at honing so I am anticipating some "fun" before I get the hang of things. Thanks.
As glen and lynn have mentioned, you will "kill" the edge once it is honed on the 4K. For me this is all about how far I can push my 4K/8K combination in my honing.
Hmmmmm I can't seem to be able to find my stone, I have my 220/1000 but can't find my 4/8k, dont know where it possibly could have gone, hope my wife fight do something with them. The search continues

Hey all so I have a lapping question. Now I know water should be used and the DMT325 should be rinsed clean after each stone but my question is....
Should I lap starting with the 8k and go down or the other way or does it not matter. I may be over thinking this as I often do but figured I should ask.
Thanks!
Just to prepare for JaNorton 2012, I shaved with a 8k Shapton edge this morning, with my GD that's often used for honing experiments. The Shapton may be a bit finer than the Norton though. But we'll see.
The Shapton 8k shave wasn't bad at all, so I have hopes that I'll survive the Norton edge as well :)
I'm in. Here's my two and a half:

Alright.....as I posted earlier the Nortons and the DMT came in and I lapped them tonight!!! Did the 1,4 & 8k (skipped the 220 bc dont foresee using it) the lapping went well now I just need to pick out my razors! Have a few bay specials with workable blades coming and will pick from them because I don't want to mess up one that means a bunch to me! Hopefully I'll have enough time to do some testing before the new year!! Here goes nothing!! I will say it's good I have a few razors I had Lynn hone to be able to check the work against!! In all honesty I'm getting kind of excited about this journey!!
Glen, this thread has really blown up into a monster. how many people do you have now? seems like a good cross section between beginners, intermediate and honemeisters.

It has gone way beyond my most optimistic expectations for sure...
Just from some of the ideas that have hit my PM box I think there are going to be quite a bit of new tweaks and tips for pulling the best edge possible out of the N8k...
"At this Point in Time"...:p I am planning on at least two new Vids myself let alone how many more are getting made...
The best possible outcome is a plethora (fancy word warning) of different ideas and methods that not only get used on the Nortons but people will try on other stones too...
And most importantly, I don't know about you guys but I am sure having fun :)
ps: at last count we have 34 people in the game
Cant wait for the new videos, should anyone else make a video, NOT as a honing how to but for the pros to check out and give posible advice on?
Any room at the table for a rookie?
I like to hone using a cookie sheet to catch my run-off.
I won't take up much room, and I'll bring some beverages...:beer1:
...and i won't use a GD!:D
I usually DE once or twice a week, but I would happily take a DE break to participate.
hey... deja vu!
now which razors to pick...
Man, this sounds like a lot of fun. If I had a Norton 4/8, I'd be in on it as I struggle to get where I want to be with honing, this challenge would force one to learn and stay focused. Really cool, can't wait to see some results and obtain the knowledge that will be brought forth.
