Thanked: 13245The Famous/Infamous Norton 4/8 "JaNorton 2012"
Let's have some fun and compile a ton of info here on SRP about one of the easiest, most loved, most hated, most used hone, out there...
The now Famous and Infamous Norton 4k/8k...
The project starting Jan 1st 2012 is to take 2 razors from your collection and kill the edges, then re-hone them using only the Norton 4k/8k Yes slurry is allowed, but no special nagura, only use either a Norton prep stone, a Norton Lapping stone, or a diamond plate to produce it..
Please no other hones or pastes just clean Linen and/or Leather strops are allowed, hanging or paddle...
You must document exactly, the honing and stropping process, and how many shaves, passes etc that you do during January or "JaNorton 2012"
Some of us are going to do Honing, Stropping and Shaving vids during this time besides just writing all the stuff... One of the guys was thinking of Microscope pics during the process too..
You have to use these two razors as often as possible, as many times as possible during January
So far we have myself of course

LOL 3 damn Glen' (n)s in this thing, that is a bit odd
Please add a post right here in the thread and I will add your name to the list, the more people involved the more info we can compile..
There are a few goals here..
1. It should be a ton of fun
2. We should have quite a bit of info on how simple this hobby really can be.
3. Think of all the different routines that people will document that work for honing razors
4. The Vids should be worth the trouble just for the info contained in them
5. It should be a ton of fun
So we are looking for as many people as possible to join in, so we get all types of razors, and all types of Honers, we want beginners - experts, the object is to tweak the best edge out of a simple setup like the Norton 4k/8k without any other tools...
Ideas and suggestions will be considered until 12/30/2011 after that we want it to stay locked in, please PM me or post them here, but please no other hones this time around. If this works like I think it might, then we can try it with other hones later on

Thanked: 1371Glen, to be clear - we are killing the edge and then starting from the 4k, right?
No use of lower grit stones either?Last edited by HNSB; 12-14-2011 at 06:09 AM. Reason: Glen's name isn't "Geln"

Thanked: 13245Yeppers, use whatever you feel comfortable with to kill an edge,,, a few TNT's,,, a very light downstroke or corner stroke on your stone.. Just something to make sure your old edge is out of play
No lower grit stones !!!! Slurry is allowed but only from the sources stated
This is gonna be so fun hehehe just like old times here at SRP

I knew there was a reason I ordered a Norton 4/8k a few days ago, I even chose express shipping so I'll have it pretty soon.
Now this will be something diffferent from my regular 1-30k Shapton setup for sure.
Fun!

Too bad I got rid of my 4/8 Norton. But I'll be following the thread with interest... I'm particularly curious how long it will take for Bjørnar to start longing for his JNat/Escher edges...
He saw a lawyer killing a viper on a dunghill hard by his own stable; And the Devil smiled, for it put him in mind of Cain and his brother Abel.
