Thanked: 13245Martin, I would KISS it and go with two Hollow Grinds with fairly straight edges these are the normally the easiest to get honed up at least IMHO

Hmm, I'm experienced now, now that's a stretch! But I took to this fairly quickly and I have honed quite a lot for my 6 months into this I guess, but this will be a great learning experience for sure!
And that's why I ordered the Norton in the first place, and I couldn't have picked a better time for buying one

Thanked: 199Do you have 2 razors? I'm just using 2 that I shave with often so I can compare the shave to what I'm used to. If you are picking up some just for this, I don't really know what to tell ya. I imagine any razor that has proven to be reliable would be fine. If you're new to honing, stay away from a smiling blade...this can take a while to get the hang of. And avoid a wedge. Stick to the hollow ground ones. They don't take as long to hone up.
*Glen chimed in while I was typing! Guess I type too slow :P But he's right *Last edited by avatar1999; 12-14-2011 at 06:01 PM.

This should be educational. Is there a rookie category? So far, I have only used my 8k as a finisher on the handful of razors I've honed, to mostly good reviews. I have a nice comparison, with 2 TI Le Canadien 6/8s, one done by Maxi and finished on the Escher,.one done by me and finished on the 8k. I've been curious to try the one-stone 4k/8k method.

Man, this would be fun. If I didn't still have a pile of razors to test shave for others I would order a Norton for this.

Thanked: 1587Reading this thread and feeling the enthusiasm from experienced honer and rookie alike is really warming the cockles of my heart. It is also a funny feeling - perhaps a bit of nostalgia is kicking in.
As Glen has said, back in the day the Norton 4/8 was pretty much it. And "back in the day" was actually not that long ago, really. When I first joined SRP we were all using the Norton, most were shaving off the 8K, a few hardy souls were figuring out how to use the Coticule, the rich (or lucky, or both) had Eschers, and a small group of "radicals" were starting to look at Japanese natural stones (you needed to know a guy who knew a guy in Japan...). Some weirdos were starting to rub green powder on their strops.
My how things have changed in only 6 years
I love this idea because it is kind of a recursion (in the programming sense) - not only are we all reviving the age-old and (maybe not-so) lost art of straight razors from times of yore, within that context we are all going back in our own time to reinvigorate and revive the age-old and (maybe not-so) lost art of Norton 4/8 honing!!
Sweet!
