Like a few others here, I've never attempted to hone. I have purchased some stones (including the required Nortons) but never actually made any attempts to hone.
If there ever was an excuse to, this is it. I'm in.

I'll miss my Oozuku edges, but this sounds like too much fun--I'm in as well!

I got one of my 2 razors picked out, the 8/8 1/4 grind Brian Brown, and will probably choose something hollow and German for the other

I've been wondering about something Lynn said. Are we going off a set bevel, or from bevel set to shave ready?
I have a couple restores (sans scales, anyone have any extras they don't want?) that will need start to finish, and a couple of users that will need rehoning, but the bevels of course were good when I got them.

Thanked: 13245To get the most out of this you want to kill the edge..
You can actually do that without destroying the bevel with a few TNT's
I do it with a very very light draw of the edge across the corner of a stone, -BUT- I don't recommend that to everyone
Like Lynn said earlier when you start honing on the 4k essentially you are creating a new bevel anyway..
Just try and make sure you are using just a Norton 4/8 edge and yer fine...
These are my two choices for the fun...
Both have been in my personal collection for quite some time... Both have not ever been re-honed they are still sporting the original edges that I put on them.. The Bengall was originally honed on the Norton 4/8 the Henckels I think I had bought the Shapton 16k by the time I bought it but can't really remember...
a 11/16 Henckels
a 6/8 Bengall
I also just picked up a new set of Nortons for this, (I needed/wanted them anyway) but I went seperate stones this time instead of the combo stone..Last edited by gssixgun; 12-16-2011 at 05:57 AM.

What an awesome Idea! Been dropping hints to the wifey that I wanted a norton combo for christmas. As a stone cold newb when it comes to honing I would love to join, but no way to know if I have the stones (heh heh) until christmas. I will enjoy watching though!
I'm a sucker for a stamped tail. Giggity.

Hey Glen this raises an interesting question for me and i assume some other noobs as well..., are there any advantages/disadvantages to having the 4/8 combo or the individual 4 and 8 stones? and if so what do you perceive them to be??? I am really thinking i may go out a buy a combo just to join in on this even tho i as well have NEVER honed before but figure it may be an interesting challenge to start with just this stone since i see a lot of guys advise starting with JUST this stone anyway!
thanks!
