I just picked up two straight razors that I will be using. They are both vintage Boker's that appear to have blades in good condition. I'm guessing they will not have much of an edge set when they arrive. Do I understand correctly that I have to use the 4000 grit norton to set the edge? Are we allowed to use a 1000 grit norton to set the edge and then the 4000/8000 to get it (hopefully) shave ready? I didn't want to use my two razors I am currently shaving with because I didn't want to ruin them. This will be my first attempt at honing so I am anticipating some "fun" before I get the hang of things. Thanks.

    No 1k's allowed, 4 and 8k only.

Get your razors shave ready before January 1st however you can. Logically, the limitation applies only after you have killed the edge of your shave-ready razors when "JaNorton 2012" starts. Otherwise you'll need most of January just to set the bevel with a 4k.

As glen and lynn have mentioned, you will "kill" the edge once it is honed on the 4K. For me this is all about how far I can push my 4K/8K combination in my honing.

Hey all so I have a lapping question. Now I know water should be used and the DMT325 should be rinsed clean after each stone but my question is....

Should I lap starting with the 8k and go down or the other way or does it not matter. I may be over thinking this as I often do but figured I should ask.

    Thanks!

Just make sure you wash off the slurry after lapping from the stone, and from the DMT too, and you should be fine

Just to prepare for JaNorton 2012, I shaved with a 8k Shapton edge this morning, with my GD that's often used for honing experiments. The Shapton may be a bit finer than the Norton though. But we'll see.
The Shapton 8k shave wasn't bad at all, so I have hopes that I'll survive the Norton edge as well

Alright.....as I posted earlier the Nortons and the DMT came in and I lapped them tonight!!! Did the 1,4 & 8k (skipped the 220 bc dont foresee using it) the lapping went well now I just need to pick out my razors! Have a few bay specials with workable blades coming and will pick from them because I don't want to mess up one that means a bunch to me! Hopefully I'll have enough time to do some testing before the new year!! Here goes nothing!! I will say it's good I have a few razors I had Lynn hone to be able to check the work against!! In all honesty I'm getting kind of excited about this journey!!
