    Man, I missed this thread!!!

Is there room in here for a beginner, and I mean, raw, have only managed 3 bevels EVER kind of beginner????

I'm in because I suck totally at setting bevels. I have the required hardware, just am lacking in knowledge.

I have tried and tried, watching vids etc.. reading everything I can, but you can't get pressure from a video.

I've kind of stopped trying now, because I need someone to show me how to do it right. I've realized that I won't get it by myself.

So, I'd like to join in on this challenge, and maybe I will come out of it knowing how to set a bevel with my 4/8 norton. Maybe???? I'll get lucky and it will work.

Go for it, why not? We're here to help and talk about how we use the norton, solve problems on the norton, lap the norton, etc.

You should perfect for this to me.

    So lapping question here...

In glen's video it looks like he hasn't soaked the stone before lapping. Should you not soak pre lap?

He laps under water for a long time, I don't think the soaking does matter. But for a maintenance lapping, I would soak the stone first, so the sufrace remains wet for those few seconds.

The Joseph Rodgers is done, the following is the procedure I used:

I lapped the 4K with a DMT 325, cleaned the hone off and raised some slurry with the same DMT.

I did 40 lite pressure circles followed 10 X strokes and repeated 4 times until I can shave arm hair at skin level. I rinsed the 4K, raised very thin slurry and did 10 X strokes, then repeated this with water only.

I lapped the 8K with the DMT 325, cleaned the hone off and raised lite slurry with the same DMT.

I did 40 circles less pressure followed by 10 X strokes 3 times, after this I was able to cut hair above skin level. I rinsed the 8K, did 10 X strokes on water only.

I re-lapped the 8K side with the DMT, followed by 2000 grit sandpaper, then 4000, followed by several figure 8s with a PHIG.

I did 20 X strokes with no pressure on water only then 50 laps on linen cotton, and 100 on English Bridle. I got to HHT 4 as well.

Default I started a little early

I started tonight thinking why wait until January.

For my first razor I chose a George Westenholm and sons Washington Works frameback. It is my first frameback and has the biggest smile I have ever tried. It hasn't been honed in many years so it didn't need its edge dulled.

After watching the video I lapped my hones. It went pretty quick as they didn't need it.

I used one layer of tape on the spine and over 200 rolling x strokes later I was happy with the bevel. I would have stopped sooner but there was one rust pit that I had to remove. I say over 200 because I lost track counting in the middle. I held the stone in my left had. Pushing away from me I got the stroke down pretty well. I had trouble hitting the toe on the return. I used what I consider heavy pressure during most of this time lessening towards the end.

Once I was happy with the bevel I did 25 light strokes on the 4000 and 30 using the 8000.

For stropping I used a Beau Brummel strop that I got from a friends dad. He said he bought it in 1960 when he was in barbers school.
I did 25 passes on the linen and 25 on the leather.

I will find out in the morning how it shaves.

I soak mine 10-15 min before lapping, I think it works better that way. Glen didn't mention this in his video (GLEN!) but I always heard you should soak before you do anything.

Me neither, its almost a week away!

All I can say is I am using very hone worn razors from antique shops to make them razor shaving ready as this is all I use for shaving. No new Dovos, etc, for this!

I have some thoughts might need clarification for me:

First, What kind of razor is best for a newbie to honing to get good results honing? Along with that, what size is best, like should I pick a 4/8, 5/8, 6/8, 7/8 or 15/16? I have all of the above in sizes, but for each configuration, i.e. I have some with smiles, some round point, some spike points etc, I have different sizes of each.

    Thanks for the help!!!
