    Default Honing a Kamisori

Down the road I'd love to try a Kamisori. Out of cusiosity, do you hone it the exact same way as a normal straight razor, or do you have to use a totally different style of honing? Can you use normal norton wet stones?

I use 10/3 front/back strokes and get great results.
The trick is to set the bevel on the ura size properly before you go the ratio.
Another thing to keep in mind on kamisori , unless you are fixing some serious issue, you do not want to start lower than 4k grit. I usually start on coticule and move on to finer grits.

The honing method is different to match the blade type. You have to be careful cause you can mess up one of these very fast if you don't know what you are doing and repair can be a problem, big time.

I've used 3 to 1 ratios and 10 to 1 and to tell you the truth the off side should get as little as possible once your bevel is set of course and your in the later stages.

Both sides are actually hollow . There is no flat side.

For the sake of definition, the Omote = Front & the Ura = Back.

The Ura (back) has the stamps on it & receives the least time on the stones. The Ura should have a very small bevel. Think of it as the back of a wood chisel which also would receive very little honing.

I could never remember which was which till I understood about Uraoshi & Uradashi in reference to planes & chisels : How to Sharpen a Plane Blade Part1: How to Make a Beautiful Ura (Uraoshi Technique) [Archive] - Woodwork Forums
