Not necessarily. And a DMT is not necessarily faster than a synthetic stone.
    For a knife such as ka-bar, I just use a 200 / 1000 grit stone.
Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

I don't want to ruin my stones, this thing is stainless and hard to sharpen. I need a DMT for it I think.
If you're sharpening a knife, DMT is the way to go. I basically have this kit:

    Aligner™ Easy Edge-Guided Sharpening Kits | DMT® - Diamond Machining Technology

It's a nice guided system, and it's been my go-to for all my knives for a long while. The adjustable guide makes sure you keep a consistent angle on the knives. Not sure which ka-bar your friend has, but the thickness of the blade might not fit if it's a big one...

I have one and it does a good job on knives but I'd never put my razors to it. Besides, it's too much fun sharpening them by hand to mechanize the process.
