    the side shown is the good side but there is loads of tarnish on the rear side that I could not see (the crafty sod), it may polish off. You can see the "frown" on the blade. It isn't much but is enough to cause problems.

    Still, practicing this method will get you ready for a piece that DOES deserve it. As for straight down, it should make no difference on a well-lapped norton other than wearing it more evenly.
