As Blix said, while trueness is important I was more thinking what everyone has been referencing regarding the Norton's surface from the factory. While I don't own a Norton I have helped new honers with theirs and have found similar results regarding the first 1/16" or so.

Well I didn't lap the stone before I sharpened my razor today. It still cut fairly well, but it probably could use a few more passes on the stone. At the end of my shave, I was left with a few rough patches here and there, but that is more than likely the cause of my shaving inexperience and not razor sharpness. In the next day or so I will follow the instructions on lapping 101, lap my stone, and then give another 3-5 passes on the 8k and see where that gets me.

    Thanks for the info

    Ron

Thanks Avatar1999, unfortunately I do not have the funds for this at the moment. I am just going to follow the instructions in lapping 101 and use sand paper for now. Thank you for the advice, I am sure when I have the funds it will be a good buy.

Sandpaper on a flat surface will work fine--300 or so grit should work, but you may want to pick up 1 or 2 sheets of 120 for the initial 1/16" or so & then go to the finer paper. Make sure you use good brands of paper (Norton & 3M are pretty reliable)--the cheaper grades can leave grit embedded in your stone.
