Default I just want to be normal

I have had great results (for me) refreshing razors with a 5k, 10k Chosera followed by a jnat stone. I tried setting a bevel on a razor with a small chip using the 1k Chosera. I was able to share arm hair from the 1k, but when I went to the 5k, the edge would no longer cut arm hair after the first few circle passes. Is this normal?

By the time I went through the progression of stones using circles and x-strokes, I had a great shave, but am curious if I should see/feel blade degradation when moving to a finer stone.

As you progress up there should be an overall improvement. If the process reverses you are doing something wrong. Review your basic honing techniques. Check your angle and pressure and type of stroke.

In the end it seemed to work out for you so I wouldn't worry though.

I think you are quite normal! IMHO, the circle leaves a scratch pattern where the teeth do not act as agressively as when you are using a normal X pattern variant. If you are really curious about it, do some more X patterns after the circles just to see, but the bottom line is you sound like your are doing just fine.
