    Question Tiny chips

Hi all - new user here. I'm pretty new to straight razor shaving but I've been sharpening knives as a side job for several years. My new Dovo razor after 15-20 shaves has developed some really tiny chips (I think they're tiny, but they're visible to the eye) - one toward the tip (went too close to the end of my strop) and one about 1/3 of the way up from the heel. I've got dmt f/ef/eef then many many leather strops with varying grades of compound, DMT, chromium, etc. Would a progression from the DMT f/ef/eef then a few grades of stropping (down to probably .25 micron) be enough to rescue this edge? Thanks for any input - I tried searching for this, but there are DMT threads, and there are chip repair threads.. but not much I could find that shows a proper DMT progression. Thanks!

Sorry about the pic, all I have with me right now is my iPhone and my SLR with a 50mm lens, which seems to be too long for me to get a pic of the chips.

I'm not totally satisfied with the embedded copy of this photo.

i'm assuming you've got a rough DMT, in which case, no.

the scratch pattern will be too rough and you won't get that out by using pastes only.

the cheapest option would be to send it out to a member here (look in the classifieds) to get it honed properly.

you would at the very least need a norton 4/8 waterstone if you want to repair it yourself.

cost isn't really the thing here, I have a new sharp thing to sharpen!

ok, so, I'd need something more coarse than the DMT 8f, and the progression from 8ef to 8eef will still be too scratched - gotcha. I know that DMT claims the eef is something like 8k grit, but isn't it more like 5k?

what about the dmt progression, coarse, fine, extra fine, extra extra fine, then shapton glass 16k - too big of a difference from the dmt to the shapton?

with a lot of my knives I finish on a paper wheel, but I'd never do that to a razor.

I would suggest searching this forum about the DMT8EE and see what other people's experiences are with them.

the shapton 16K is a great hone, though as I don't have one, I can't really comment on wether or not it will cover the gap from 8k to 16k.

I would recommend the Norton 4k/8k stone. It's good, and as you can read in the thread below, many of us spent a month with just the Norton 4/8, and got very good results. Also, if you have it, I would also recommend the DMT D8C to lap your Norton hones. You can find more info on that in the forums, and also the "Library" link at the top of the page. If I can help, just shoot me a PM, glad to help!

I can tell you that the Shapton 16K will do fine after 8K, but I'm not sure what your stone is and whether it is an 8K. My typical progression is 4K, 8K, 16k and then 30K. The 30K step is likely unnecessary, but I bought the thing so I use it. I try to avoid the 1K, but use it when I have to.

Owner of an extra-fine 6"x2" DMT tablet. Mine had imperfections that rendered it unsuitable for straights (IMO) but it's an awesome finisher for cutlery. EF is good at steel removal and I think if you wanted you could work it off if you've got a Fine. Gemstones are aggressive cutters (uncompromising?) and you'll be able to remove metal quickly, just be mindful of the swarf, dude. Surely there's an abrasive compound that could bridge the gap in your honing scheme if you don't have one already.

    What are your tablets' dimensions?
