Thanked: 0Norton 4/8 combo the same grit sizing for Japanese stones?
Hi Everyone,
Does the Norton 4/8 combo stone use the same grit size as the Japanese waterstones?
I got two combo Japanese stones of 800/4000 and 1000/6000 grit size. Can I just use the 4000 side and 6000 side with the Pyramid system? I also have a four side diamond pasted strop from Tony Miller. Do I have everything thats needed?
Have a great day and God bless.
Thanks,
kelly

Thanked: 346It's really difficult to compare grits, there are too many different ways to measure it, and too many other variables, fortunately none of this is very critical. You don't mention what grits you've got on your pasted paddle, but you should be able to go from the 4k to either the 6k hone or 3 micron (~8k) paste, then to 1 micron (~15k) paste, then on up from there if you wish. Assuming you've got a decent selection of pastes you should be covered.
It's not really necessary to get up into the really fine grits. I usually stop somewhere around 12k-15k, and one of my favorite finishing hones is only about 6k. The finer grits produce a sharper but more delicate edge.

Thanked: 2209They are pretty much comparable for all practical purposes. Just be sure to work up a slurry on the Japanese hones. It sounds like you have everything you need.
