    Default Problem Razor

I've honed well over 100 razors, so I'm no rookie. That being said I picked up a Morris Collegiate 5/8 with a frown, I fixed the frown and started trying to set a bevel. I've tried everything up to three layers of tape, no tape, pressure, no pressure, circles, 1/2 x-strokes, x-strokes, 320 diamond plates, soft Arkansas, carborundum hones, everything but the kitchen sink and it still won't even cut arm hair?%$@

To make sure I didn't lose my skills I grabbed a junker and had it shave ready in 20 mins and then used it.

Any ideas?? I'm at a lose on this one

    No pics, come on...

How did you correct the frown? Do you use magnification to literally see what is going on? Was it "restored"? What are you trying to set the bevel on?

These are all very valid questions as I am sure you will know with your expereince. Personally I don't breadknife, just don't believe in it. I take frowns out by honing like I would on a pocket knife on a EZ lap fine diamond stone typically, spine lifted, freehand. Then I add a layer of tape to the spine and set the bevel on 1K, watching the progress using magnification. Once I have the bevel "set" with the tape (it can take several replacements of the tape on the spine if you have a hard steel razor) on the spine & I "see" this, I then remove the tape and re-set the bevel and then go thru the chosen progression of stones.

I also ask if the razor has been "restored" as I have run across quite a few "restored" blades that the heat treat was destroyed by buffers.

I'll get pictures later. I can't take any extreme close-up
I did the lifted spine until the frown was gone, then one layer of tape to start with on a DMT 325 then 1k, then it spiraled out of control from there

It didn't have the "restored with a grinder" look, just the usual dark patina

When I am lost I check the bevel under a mike and I do the bevel marking test. Those 2 tests usually tell me what's going on.

Morris makes some fine razors. Maybe the steel is just harder than you're used to.

It seems like very hard steel, that could be it
